"What should I wear to work today?" is the age-old question that crosses the minds of women everywhere in the morning. While the thought of picking the perfect workwear uniform might feel complicated, it's actually easier than you'd think. The key? Sticking to the classics.
"The most important element to a closet and something that I reiterate to my clients is a focus on staple pieces: the timeless, classic items that you can use as building blocks for outfits" says Bailey Moon, a New York-based celebrity and personal stylist. What he means by that: a crisp white button down shirt, black pencil skirt, slim-fitting suit set, or trend-cycle-defiant little black dress. "These are the pieces you can always reach for in a pinch and style an outfit around," adds Moon. "It's the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy effect—effortless chic that works for any office setting and transitions well into post-work events."
Also important: finding a good tailor. "I place a big emphasis on not only taking care of your clothes but also making sure they fit well and work for your body shape," says Moon. "A tailor via a local dry cleaner can do wonders to sharpen a look, whether it's a hem, taking in an item, or even letting it out based on seam allowance."
Don't forget about the accessories, either. "I abide by the Coco Chanel rule of 'Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off,'" says Moon. "Accessories are a great way to spruce up an outfit and make outfits transition for different parts of the day. But when in doubt, less is always more."
At the end of the day, "wear what you feel best [in]," continues Moon. "I always push my clients to try new silhouettes, colors and designers. They are often surprised that something they see on the hanger takes on a new life once they have it on."
