Erinnert ihr euch noch, was für ein Eklat es war, wenn in den frühen 2000ern ein Promi mal ein Kleid zweimal auf dem roten Teppich anhatte?
Könnt ihr euch noch die Medienberichterstattung ins Gedächtnis rufen, als Kate Middleton es beim europäischen Adel salonfähig gemacht hat, öfter mit ein und demselben Kleidungsstück gesehen zu werden?
Und ist euch aufgefallen, dass wenn große Blogger Sachen öfter zeigen, anstatt jede Woche ein komplett neues Outfit zu präsentieren, die Follower sie fragen, wann denn mal wieder etwas Neues zu sehen ist?
Ich glaube, wir haben uns selbst in eine Situation hineinmanövriert, in der es inakzeptabel ist, etwas zweimal zu tragen – nein Moment, etwas zweimal zu tragen und damit gesehen zu werden. Wie ironisch ist das denn? Erstens sind Kleider keine Wegwerfartikel, zweitens ist das alles andere als nachhaltig, und drittens gibt es ja wohl genug gute Gründe, Kleidungsstücke über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg zu lieben, anstatt sie nur 1-2 mal zu tragen!
All das ist eine Frage der Einstellung: Social Media spielt mal wieder eine große Rolle darin, uns bestimmte Verhaltensmuster einzuimpfen, die wir eher unterbewusst mitbekommen und sie gleichzeitig in unsere Denkweise einbauen. Manchmal hinterfragen wir das, was wir auf Instagram und Co. sehen, gar nicht – zum Beispiel das Mädel, das jede Woche woanders hin reist, die Zweite, die jeden Tag ein neues Outfit trägt oder ob wir dieses Paar Stiefel, das wir in ihrer Story gesehen haben, wirklich brauchen. Wir haben den Punkt erreicht, an dem es „Recycling“ genannt wird, wenn man das gleiche Outfit zweimal trägt, und obwohl Recycling durchaus eine positive Konnotation hat (weil nachhaltig), hat der Ausdruck „Outfit-Recycling“ einen gegenteiligen Effekt, denn mal ehrlich: Wer will denn etwas scheinbar „Altes“ und gewissermaßen „wieder Aufgearbeitetes“, wenn er etwas Neues bekommen kann?
Zu dem ganzen Thema habe ich neulich einen ziemlich genialen Tweet gelesen, in dem jemand schrieb, „Outfit-Recycling“ sei doch nur das ganz normale Tragen von Klamotten. Mehr als einmal, weil ihr sie euch nach eurem Geschmack und Stil ausgesucht habt. Dem ist denke ich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen. Mythos aufgelöst.
Und um das Ganze mal ein bisschen praktischer zu betrachten: Es ist nicht schwierig, eure Outfits wieder und wieder zu tragen (ach was), und falls ihr wirklich jedes Mal etwas neues braucht, könnt ihr ganz einfach ein kleines Detail verändern. Ist euch zum Beispiel aufgefallen, dass ich dieses Outfit hier schon anhatte? Ich trage nur einen anderen Rock dazu und schon ist es ein anderer Stil!

Do you recall the press coverage about the change of mind Kate Middleton brought into Europe’s nobility when she was spotted with the same garment she’d worn a few months before?
Did you notice more and more bloggers turning away from the “Wear once, throw away” policy and actually making use of their (huge) wardrobe, all while being hated on for not showing new pieces?
I think we’ve put ourselves in a position where it’s become unacceptable to wear something twice – well, that’s not entirely true, rather to wear something twice and be seen with it. How ironic actually, because clothes are in no way a disposable. Apart from the obvious reasons and the sustainability concept, there are so many more perks to loving your clothes for way more time than wearing them on 1-2 occasions only!
But it’s all a matter of the mindset: Again, social media play a leading role in trying to tell us how we should behave, that is, injecting certain pictures and thoughts into our heads that we’ll only perceive subconsciously, and that’ll become part of our way of thinking. Often times, we don’t even question them, for example why those Instagram girls always wear new clothing, or if we really need that new pair of boots we’ve seen on their stories. We’ve come so far that we reached the point where wearing the same outfit twice is referred to as “recycling” your look, and even though recycling comes with a positive connotation in terms of sustainability, this expression will have the opposite effect, because let’s be honest: Who wants something seemingly “old” and kind of “refurbished” when you can have something new?
However, I read a tweet recently where someone pointed out that “recycling” your clothes in fact means “wearing” your clothes. More than once, because you picked them based on your taste and style. Well, I think there isn’t anything to add to this. Myth busted.
And, on a more practical note: It isn’t so hard to wear your outfits all over again (duh), but if you really don’t like the thought of it, just change one little detail. For example, did you notice that I’ve worn this look here already? Just swapped the skirt and it’s appearing to be a different style!
